Richard Augustus Allen passed away on Nov. 30, 2005 after suffering a heart attack Thanksgiving Day, despite heroic and caring efforts of both the PWFD Fire Medics and his doctors. Born on June 7, 1915 in Manhssaet to one of North Hempstead's oldest families, he was married to the late Zita Matist. They had a son Richard. Following service to his country in Europe during WWII, he married Veronica Lange. They had four children, Robert, Kenneth, William and Nancy. "Dick" worked as an upholsterer and drapery man. For recreation he enjoyed camping, hiking and mountain climbing and photographing these outings. He is survived by his wife Vera; his sister Dorothy Caputo; his five children and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his younger brother John Henry Allen. There was a service in honor of his life on Dec. 4 at the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington.
