A Port Washington tradition for more than 60 years, the annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 23, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Community Synagogue of Sands Point. All are invited to join hearts, hands and voices in this special service sponsored by the Port Washington Clergy Association. The synagogue is located at 150 Middle Neck Road. Host clergy are Rabbi Irwin Zeplowitz, Rabbi Rene Edelman and Cantor Clare Franco. Many of Port's religious leaders will participate in the service.
The Thanksgiving sermon will be given by the Reverend Sr. Gerri O'Neill, the religious education director of Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church in Manorhaven. Of the Dominican Order for 53 years, Sr. Gerri has become "an institution unto herself" at Fatima over the last 25 years of ministry. She is beloved by many in her parish family and the greater Port community.
Cantor Franco, music leader for the service, has invited choir members from all congregations to join in a combined choir. His amassed choir will be singing traditional Thanksgiving hymns, including We Gather Together and Psalm 100 and patriotic songs.
A free-will offering shall be gathered and is designated for domestic hurricane relief. Community Synagogue will provide refreshments following the service.
