The United States Power Squadrons' Basic Boating Course will be given at the Schreiber High School, Room 140, 101 Campus Drive, Port Washington, NY starting Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. for eight weeks. The course covers boating fundamentals for all boaters from the operator of a small outboard to the skipper of a family cruiser or sailboat. It includes boat handling, equipment requirements, navigation rules, aids to navigation, chart and compass fundamentals, basic piloting and plotting techniques and the use of GPS. Personal Water Craft certification is also offered.

A USPS certificate, which is recognized in all states, is awarded to those who successfully complete the course. Many insurance companies offer discounts to boat owners who complete the course. Instructors are experienced boaters who are USPS members. Youths under age 16 may attend only if accompanied by an adult. Instruction is free. But there is a materials fee of $45 payable to the instructor. Call Bob Miller at 944-9863 for further information or just attend the first class.
