I would like to thank so many community members for sharing their ideas, frustrations and support with me during recent weeks. Once again, I would also like to thank all of those who voted on May 17 . The message that these are extraordinarily difficult financial times for our community yet we want our students to succeed has been heard. I have also heard that teacher contract negotiations and some related issues are of particular concern for a portion of our community. While I will always stand firm in my conviction that we can and must enable our students to achieve in a manner the community can support, State law prohibits me from discussing ongoing negotiations. I do wish to emphasize my continued optimism in a great Port School system, wonderful students, terrific teachers, dedicated parents, and a caring community.
Based on community feedback, and according to law, a vote on a revised school budget has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 21. The board of education meeting to adopt the revised budget will be held on June 7 at 8 p.m. at Weber Middle School. A public hearing on the adopted budget will be held on June 14 at 8 p.m. at Schreiber. By the time you read this letter, the board will have also met on June 1 for a budget work session (including additional community comments). While I hope residents will use these opportunities to share their views and to learn more about the tremendous fiscal and educational challenges that we face, I know that not everyone will be able to attend. Please be assured that both the board of education and I read all letters and e-mails you send and that your input is important.
As your superintendent, I pledge myself to continuing to serve our students, staff and the community to the best of my abilities. I am certain that together we can address and resolve the educational and fiscal challenges that confront us.
Geoffrey N. Gordon, Ed.D.
