On Saturday, Feb. 5, starting at 1 p.m. in the Schreiber HS gym a wonderful, fun-day has been planned for girls in grades 3-8. High School coaches, assisted by high school students ,will be on hand to organize and conduct clinics for the girls in a warm, friendly, non-competitive environment. Some of the clinics will be basketball, lacrosse and gymnastics. Refreshments and special giveaways will round out the day's program. This year marks the 19th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).
It is definitely a day any girl would not want to miss. No matter how much or how little a girl's experience in sports is, all are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only required skill is the desire to have fun.
Port Washington, as in years past, joins in the network of sports educators across the country showing their support of the Day. This year's theme is "More than a Game."
NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player, Flo Hyman, for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality of women's sports. NGWSD has evolved into a day devoted to acknowledging the past accomplishments of female athletes and recognizing current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
We've come a long way and your support of the day will go a long way in promoting women's sports.
Any questions, call the district's athletic office at 767-5990. Girls should come dressed to participate and wear sneakers!
