Bill Scaglione won a stunning victory over his opponent for the seat vacated on the Port Washington Garbage District by Jimmy Kallenberg. He received 556 votes, while his opponent, Doug Schlaefer, garnered only 251, despite Schlaefer's well-run and well-financed campaign. It was Mr. Schlaefer's second unsuccessful bid for the position. Last year he ran against incumbent commissioner Pat Van Dusen.
Other results for the special district elections for the three incumbent commissioners are as follows: water pollution district-Don Kurz-381; water district-Tom Murray-389 and police district-Sal Zimbardi-437.
