The Port Washington Fire Department hosted a Pasta Dinner and Chinese Auction on Saturday Nov. 6 to help benefit Ashley Cosola, a 5-year old diagnosed with lung cancer. The event was a huge success and demonstrated the tremendous support and concern in our community.

Ashley Cosola is the daughter of Gina and Vito Cosola. Vito, a graduate of Schreiber High School, is a member of the Port Washington Fire Department. During his voluntary service of 18 years as fire medic, Vito has responded to thousands of calls for emergency medical assistance in our community. As his profession, he has worked in the emergency room of North Shore Hospital for 14 years helping others. A year ago, Ashley was found to have cancer. Unfortunately, after six operations and the removal of a kidney, she now requires almost daily chemotherapy to fight the cancer. The huge medical costs imposed on the Cosola family for treatment are overwhelming.

In the true spirit of the Port Washington Fire Department, this fundraiser was held with great success. After many days of planning and preparation, the firehouse was filled to capacity with lines of people waiting at the door. Bus transportation was provided and allowed overflow parking at the Town Dock. Seating for the dinner was on both levels of the firehouse. The buffet style dinner, prepared by members of the firehouse and their families, was well received. It included pasta, meatballs, sausages, garlic bread and salad. The fresh baked desserts were delicious and endless in variety. All guests who attended received an entry for a flat-screen T.V. as a door prize. The Chinese auction and bucket raffle added fun and excitement to the evening's events. Many local businesses showed their support by donating prizes. This fundraiser drew in 850 people and exceeded all expectations. All proceeds will go directly to the Cosola family to help with their on-going medical expenses. If you were unable to attend the dinner and wish to contribute to "The Ashley Fund," please contact the headquarters of the Port Washington Fire Department at 883-2200.
