The United States Power Squadrons' Basic Boating Course will be given at the Schreiber High School, Room 140, 101 Campus Drive, Port Washington, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. for eight weeks. The course covers boating fundamentals for all boaters from the operator of a small outboard to the skipper of a family cruiser or sailboat. It includes boat handling, equipment requirements, navigation rules, aids to navigation, chart and compass fundamentals, basic piloting and plotting techniques, and the use of GPS. Personal Water Craft certification is also offered.
A USPS certificate, which is recognized in all states, is awarded to those who successfully complete the course. Youths under age 16 may attend only if accompanied by an adult. Instruction is free.
