Doris Gallanter, a long time Port Washington resident, died in her sleep on Aug. 7, 2004 at North Shore University Hospital Center for Extended Care and Rehabilitation. She died after a long illness. She was born on Sept. 17, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was predeceased by her ex husband Shelley Gallanter. Her survivors are her sister, Alice Hanell; and her two sons, Steven and Peter. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Amy and Jennifer. A memorial service was held at North Shore Unitarian Church on Aug. 28.
Cheryl Ann (Milhaven) Nolan, a former Port Washington resident, passed away on Aug. 12, 2004 in Jasper, GA, after a lengthy illness. She was 59 years old. Ms. Nolan attended Port Washington schools from kindergarten to her 1963 graduation from Paul D. Schreiber High School. She was a 27-year resident of Port Washington prior to her moving to Georgia in 1974. Ms. Nolan was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Charlotte Milhaven. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Heather Nolan of Rome, GA; brother Harry Milhaven; brother and sister-in-law, George and Barbara Milhaven of Port Washington; sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Robert Fischer of Thousand Oaks, CA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington.
Bennett A. Moskowitz, a longtime resident of Port Washington, passed away Sept. 1, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. He was 78 years old and was food chemist who owned his own business in Brooklyn. He is survived by his wife, Doreen; and his son, Jay; in addition to a sister, Devorah Gorman. He was a scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 1001 in Port Washington for more than 10 years. He was a retired major in the Air Force Reserve and a veteran of WWII and Korea. He was buried with military honors at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont on Sept. 3.
Laura Scopas (nee Ravnich), 72, of Port Washington, died on Sept. 8, 2004. She is survived by her husband Anthony; her children, Susan Dunkel (Dan) and Linda Kramer (Daniel); and her grandchildren, Derek, Daren and David. Laura is also survived by her siblings, Maria, Franko, Luigi, Joseph and Ettienne. She was preceded in death by her brother Flaviano. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara RC Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
