The Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church of North Hempstead closed on its purchase of vacant land on Fairview Drive in Port Washington on August 6, 2004. Archangel Michael, the only Greek Orthodox church in North Hempstead, has long outgrown its present site in Roslyn Heights. The purchase is the culmination of efforts extending more than a decade to find a suitable property as the future site of a new dome church and ancillary structures.
The property, consisting of 4.62 acres, is part of the Morewood estate in Port Washington. It borders the north side of Fairview Drive and is directly across from the Harbor Links golf courses. In 2000, the church entered into a contract to purchase the land from its owner, the Town of North Hempstead Solid Waste Management Authority. In the intervening two years, both the church and the Town took steps to fulfill contractual requirements. The town approved the church's site plan at the town board meeting on June 29, 2004.
The church plans to hold a liturgy under a tent on the new property on September 26, 2004. His Grace, Bishop Savas, chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will bless the land and lead the congregation in worship. A luncheon will follow at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. The church, having already commenced its capital campaign to raise funds, hopes to break ground in the spring 2005. Any donations to the capital campaign can be sent to the Capital Campaign Committee, Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, 108 Warner Avenue, Roslyn Heights, NY 11577.
