The annual event raises money to help support WORC, a not-for-profit agency that provides comprehensive care to individuals with mental retardation, traumatic brain injury and developmental disabilities. Since the inception of the event, named in honor of Geraldo Rivera, over two million dollars has been raised for WORC.
This year's outing raised $105,000 and honored Victor Girgenti. Mr. Girgenti, a longtime resident of Sands Point who grew up in Port Washington, is president of Longview Trading, Inc. Along with the support of Geraldo, Girgenti rallied his friends and family members to help ensure that the event would be a great success.
All proceeds from the event benefit WORC. WORC manages 30 group homes throughout Nassau, Queens and Suffolk Counties. WORC also offers 12 non-residential support programs. In addition to providing quality care to some special people, WORC is also known for its efficiency. In fact, as cited in their most recent audited financial report, 92 cents of every dollar donated to WORC is spent directly on the people in their care.
