It has become popular to accentuate what our school district has not accomplished. As in any large organization there is always room for improvement and there is no question the district is continually working to get better and more efficient. Under Dr. Gordon's leadership money was put into reserve accounts to make sure we could get the lowest rate for the $68 million bond and Port Washington did. How many times did I read that this construction project would NEVER get done for anywhere close to $68 million. Well guess what? It is!
In this budget, numerous positions are being left unfilled and others have had to be cut. Despite population increases at both the middle and high school, no additional staff is being added. The opening of South Salem Elementary School is being done without adding any classroom teachers. For the first time in several years, $250,000 is being appropriated to start the process of replacing the roofs and other critical facilities' needs.
The message that the taxpayers are fed up has been received. We don't need any more messages! We need a governor that stops adding to what each district must provide and then fails to add any funding for it. Only about 8 cents out of every dollar the district spends comes from either the state or federal government. Could you imagine if we could vote on the annual budget for the US government and NY State? How many of those budgets would ever pass? I have heard the local taxpayer and will continue to try and balance the needs of our students with what both our residential and commercial taxpayers have to pay. Please support the efforts of the board by voting yes on May18th on the budget.
