  • Sports: On the Bay

This coming weekend, on August 8, artist John MacGowan, who grew up in Manhasset and began his sailing career here on Manhasset Bay, will make his debut at the Newport Art Museum, in Newport, R.I. His show, entitled "Blue Water," will feature a selection of paintings depicting New England coasts, classic and contemporary sailing scenes and images inspired by his own sailing experiences. The show runs from August 8 through October 5 and is a highlight of a museum-wide theme "The Everlasting Sea" featuring the Fellows of the American Society of Marine Artists. Known in international yachting circles as "Johnny Mac," MacGowan draws on his lifetime of competition at the highest level, having been involved in five America's Cup campaigns, beginning in 1980 with Dennis Conner's Enterprise/Freedom syndicate. What few outside the sailing world realize is that his fine detail and keen ability to capture a location's spirit through color and motion has earned commissions throughout the world for marine, landscape and seascape paintings. His paintings hang in private collections as well as fine art galleries. Readers who are heading north for a vacation, may want to stop off in Newport to see this worthwhile and beautiful exhibit. But if you can't make it to Newport, take a peek at MacGowan's work by visiting www.johnmacgowan.com. FULL STORY
