Forever Green ... at Manorhaven School
Manorhaven School has often been referred to as a "lean green machine." These words never rang more true than when Manorhaven School agreed to be the test pilot school in Port Washington to use only environmentally safe cleaning detergents that bear the "green" seal of approval. This was an important initiative taken on by the district's school board members, and by Dr. Linda Welles, principal of Manorhaven School, and Eric Vonderhorst, facilities director for the Port Washington School District. They are all credited for permitting the use of environmentally safe products and to allow testing their cleaning effectiveness and safety at Manorhaven School over the past year.

On The Bay
According to Stanley Rosenberg, the North Shore YC has numerous sailing trophies for cruising classes but no appropriate one for the One Design Racers. Feeling that one design sailors were being neglected, Stanley, who races a Sonar, Tzuris, and is an architect with an avocation of jewelry design and silversmithing, decided to remedy the situation in 1999. The outcome was a beautiful trophy for one design sailors, called the Rosenberg Trophy, with two sterling silver three-dimensional sails mounted on a bed of green Verde marble which was sandblasted to bring out the white grain to simulate water. The sails can rotate for the various positions of the sails on the wind. Last Saturday, June 14, ten Sonar teams competed in two races, vying to have their name engraved on the trophy. The third race was canceled due to an impeding squall approaching from the northwest. Ralf Steitz won line honors, and will have his name engraved on the silver plaque at the bottom of the Rosenberg Trophy, which resides permanently in a glass case at the North Shore YC. John Browning came in second, followed by Bob Kirtland in third place.

Good Sportsmanship Ends with a Good Record
A cool wet season ended with an impressive record for the ladies varsity softball team. This was a very good year finishing with an 11-3 record, only one game behind the first place team. The team was lead by Coach Erin Fealy and assisted by Jeane Carroll. Coach Fealy noted that this team never gave up during any regular season game. She added "during the season both opposing coaches and umpires commented on how our team had great sportsmanship and a well organized program. I think that the fact that we valued sportsmanship and were committed to each other proves our success, more than our record."
