Grassroots Sponsors Environmental Conference
Almost four hundred educators, health practitioners, community leaders, environmentalists, other professionals, students, and interested citizens attended a public health symposium, Our Children at Risk II: Protecting Children from Environmental Exposures. The conference, held at Adelphi University, was jointly sponsored by Adelphi and Grassroots Environmental Education. Port-Washington-based Grassroots, founded by Patricia (Patti) Wood, arguably Port Washington's most passionate and active environmentalist, is dedicated to researching and disseminating information about toxins' impact on human health and the environment. They encourage individuals and groups to act as catalysts for change within their own communities and provide them with tools to do this effectively.

While Colin Powell blithely, though diplomatically, commented recently that France and the United States have been in marriage counseling for the past 220 years, the "marital problems" he speaks of appear to be having an effect on one local merchant here in Port.

On The Bay
There was very little local sailing-related activity on the water this past holiday week, with no frostbiting scheduled and no model boats spotted on racing on the Mill Pond last Sunday. But the boatyards were a bevy of activity, as boat owners were out in force getting their boats ready to be launched. One lone sailboat on Monday, April 21 gave those on land a picture of grace and beauty as she was ever so slightly heeled over in the light breeze on Manhasset Bay. It encouraged those who were forced to be landlubbers to be patient for a few more weeks, until the official sailing season begins.

Viking Baseball Finds Magic, Stuns Farmingdale
With an unheralded hero, some smart play calling, and great pitching, Port Baseball won their first non-league game of the season in stunning fashion. Led by first year coach Rich Greeney, and a group of exciting, young players and some crusty veterans, Port came back from a 3-0 deficit and won an important match up against the Farmingdale Dalers.
