Nassau County Smoking Ban Takes Effect
The Nassau County legislature led the way in implementing a major far-reaching smoking ban, which will affect the environment of virtually every adult in the county. Nassau's anti-smoking law went into effect March 1 and prohibits smoking in virtually all workplaces in the county. The implementation was quickly followed by New York City, with New York State's coming in the near future.

John and Rita Tanski Named Citizens of the Year by the Community Chest
The Community Chest of Port Washington announced the selection of John and Rita Tanski for its prestigious "Citizen of the Year" Award, the highest honor bestowed by the local charity. The Port Washington community is invited to come honor John and Rita Tanski on Wednesday, April 30 at 8 p.m. at the Community Chest Annual meeting, held at the Port Washington Library.

On The Bay
Warm weather on Sunday, April 13 brought out nine teams of frostbiters to compete in one of the last days of Sunday racing. Wind was out of the NW at 5-8 knots, and six races were completed including a crew race. Top skippers and crew: 1. #536, Pedro Lorson/Mimi Berry, 2. #514, Ted Toombs/Matt Cornachio, and 3. #537, Ralf Steitz/Flo Paterno. Matt Cornachio won the crew race.

PYA Girls Basketball March Madness
There is this sound. It is a sound that can only be heard at a girls' basketball game. There is nothing like it. It is louder than thunder, more forceful than a freight train and more unexpected than the roar of a jet engine flying overhead. It is the sound of excitement that begins when a team suddenly gets back into a game and thinks it can win. It begins on the bench, it fills the gym and cuts right through you (especially if you are a spectator lucky enough to be there).
