  • News: BOE Continues to Struggle With Budget Cuts

Last week, members of the Port Washington School District's Board of Education wrestled with several of the difficult budget items in the 2003-2004 preliminary school operating budget, which must be finalized before the budget is scheduled for adoption on April 15. After the potential cuts made after the last work session on March 11, the bottom line is now $91,685, 620 or a 7.33 percent increase over last year's budget. FULL STORY

  • Sports: On The Bay

After waiting 71 days (and some sailors will know exactly how many hours and minutes), the frostbite fleet was out on Manhasset Bay enjoying an especially delightful day of racing last Sunday, March 16. Herb Schmidt, the Race Committee chair was heard saying something to the effect, "it doesn't matter how many boats show up, we're going out!" He was referring to the rule that at least five boats must be ready to sail before RC heads to Kraus' Kastle to set marks on the course. With exceptionally warm weather reaching the mid 50s, Sunday's sailing could hardly be considered "frostbiting," but few skippers and crew were even noticing. In fact some were thankful to be out on such a gorgeous day. • Sports: Special Thanks to a Great Guy

He is not only a board of directors officer for PYA, he is also the man responsible for creating such exciting seasons for parents and players in PYA Basketball. His name is Tom McNamara and for the past several years, Tom has been commissioner of boys basketball for his son Sean's grade. What this means is that at the beginning of each season, Tom assesses and groups together league players, creating teams of about 10 players each. What's remarkable about this is that he truly creates a level and equitable playing field, thereby making PYA basketball closely competitive and exciting to watch. Those of us who know Tom, realize that he is deeply involved in other organizations as well. His devotion to basketball, the community and, above all, fair play, enhances the lives of our kids.
