Kevin G. Fearn, 51, of Manhasset, died on Feb. 19, 2003 after a long illness. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Manhasset and St. John's University, Jamaica. Kevin was a true St. John's "Redmen" fan and will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his parents, George and Claire Fearn; brother Dennis Fearn; sisters, Sharon Whelan, Maryanne Fearn and Susan Brown; brother-in-law, Dan Brown; nephew, William Whelan; and nieces, Megan Whelan, Melissa Brown and Kelsey Brown. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Association would be appreciated.
Vincent Rudolph Tortora was born on Dec. 24, 1926 in Brooklyn, son of Alfred M. Tortora and Olympia Cutino Tortora. He was a resident of Port Washington from 1965 until 2000 when he moved to Briarcliff Manor, where he died on Feb. 28, 2003 after a short illness. After graduation from Franklin and Marshall College, he took post graduate work in political science at the University of Padova, Italy. While there he accompanied a group of Italian Communist students to a Peace Festival in East Berlin in 1951. One of the few Americans to get behind the Iron Curtain at this time, he subsequently chronicled his experiences in the book Communist Closeup pusblished in 1954.
A popular lecturer on European politics of the Cold War Period, Tortora was also a skilled photographer and began making photographs of the Amish of Lancaster County. He worked with the Pennsylvania Folk Life Society and was director of public relations for its Kutztown Folk Festival for several years. In 1959 he made the first documentary film about the Amish, The Old Order Amish, which won awards at several film festivals. Subsequently he completed additional award-winning documentaries: The Shakers, The Hasidim, The Etruscans and Before the Industrial Revolution.
His work in public relations led to an affiliation with the Spoleto Music Festival in the late 1960s when he participated in the production of several recordings of festival performances. He produced and distributed recordings of poets reading their own poetry at the festival and made several recordings of Ezra Pound reading his work.
By 1970 he had established a firm that produced and distributed foreign language educational materials as well as his own and other educational films. He retired form this business about 1990, after which he returned to writing and lecturing. He traveled to Italy and France each year for research.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Gordon Tortora; a son, Christopher M. Tortora of Aiea, HI; and daughter, Giulia M. Tortora of Homer, AK.
Jeanne Archer McMorrow, of Walhalla, SC, died on March 2, 2003. She was a daughter of George and Rebecca Baker. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Archer-Meagher; son, George Kenneth Archer Jr.; sister Roxanna Baker Pinkerton. Memorials can be made to Upstate South Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. A memorial service was held at the Chicopee United Methodist Church on March 6.
Mary C. DeMeo, 94, of Port Washington, died on March 4, 2003. She is survived by her children, Linda Mereu (the late Gary) Al (Joan), the late Nettie Stabaseski (Stan), Leonard Jr. (Jane) and Joseph (Margaret); her siblings, Elizabeth Pennetti, Fannie Villani, the late Salvatore, Dominick and Augustine DeFeo. Dorothy George Sauer, 76, of Port Washington, died on March 6, 2003. She is survived by her husband Charles; daughter Linda Burke; and her stepchildren, Nancy, Charles, William, Steven (Bonnie) and Eric. Grandmother of Christine and Corey. Robert (Bobby) Neil Rankin, 53, of Port Washington, died on March 7, 2003. He is survived by his father Robert (the late Mary) and is brother Daniel (Janie).
