The Port Washington-Manhasset Chapter of Cancer Care Inc. will hold their 23rtd annual Walk-a-Thon on Sunday, Oct. 6, in Manorhaven Park at 10:30 a.m. The walk begins in the park, wanders down Manorhaven Blvd., strolls down Shore Rd. to Main Street, winds to Port Blvd. and flows south as far as Trunz Market. It then turns around and returns to the Park via the same route in reverse. Walkers are refreshed along the way at check-points and treated to a picnic lunch in the park at the end. The walk is usually over by 1 p.m. Prizes can be awarded to walkers based on individual pledges collected on the sponsor sheet and every registered walker gets a free Walk-a-Thon T-shirt. It is not a race and traffic laws must be obeyed. Walkers and joggers who do it for the exercise are invited to have some fun and, at the same time, help others who desperately need the help.
The proceeds of the event go toward enabling Cancer Care to provide the valuable services they have offered free to cancer patients, their families and care givers for more than 50 years. Psychological, social and financial assistance as well as information, education, referral and many other important programs are available to all.
Sponsor sheets are available at local schools and locations around town. In the Main Street area at After Five, Carnel's Printing, Jimmy's Shoes. Milazzo Insurance on Vanderventer. On Shore Rd. it's Burger King and in Manorhaven at All Port Travel Ltd. and Anthony's World of Floors. Call 883-0200 for information and visit www.cancercare.org. to see who they are and what they do.
