On Saturday, June 22, the Port Washington PAL Pirates wrapped up their spring season by defeating the Great Neck A's to win the Manhasset League Championship. The Pirates, led by head coach Matt Holzer, and assistant coaches Jim Thompson and Walter Davis went 8 and 2 during the regular season and 3 and 0 during the playoffs with wins over the two teams, which beat them during the regular season. The main reason for the team's successes was that every player on the team contributed in some way. In every game the team received great pitching from their pitchers Chris Corteselli, Tommy Davis, Mike Thompson and Justin Forgione. Their battery mates Greg Berry and Billy Brown did a great job gunning down would be base stealers and blocking balls in the dirt. The infield made spectacular plays all season long led by Jakob Mastbaum, Bryant Rich and Dan Marmor. Andrew Esposito, Frank Hinck, John Forman, and Kirt Zoeller anchored an outfield, which threw out a number of base runners trying to turn singles into doubles. The Pirates averaged about ten runs a game, because of hitters like leadoff man Jordan Caruso, and Jeremy Scalchunes. Now that they have won the Manhasset League championship, the team is now looking ahead to the summer where they will play in the Nassau County Babe Ruth League, as well as the Glen Cove Tournament.
