The Yankees completed an improbable run to win the major league baseball playoffs held at Lion's Field. After beginning the season at 0-6, the Yankees displayed a strong combination of timely hitting, quality pitching and strong defense. Led by Rich Imperatore and Steve Kaufman, the fifth seeded team peaked by defeating the fourth ranked Athletics 7-3 in the opening round. Larry Baglio and George Raccanelli made key defensive plays late in the game to help preserve the victory. Andrew Weil pitched very well, Mark Rosen and John Frocarro were steady throughout the game. Jeff Frocaro hit a towering home run but it was not enough to offset the two-homer five RBI game of Kaufman.

The Yankees defeated the top seeded Dodgers as Jon May and Dan Schure pitched outstanding ball. Nick Omeltchenko, Cody Zupnick and Mark Brewster played well in the clutch. The Dodgers had an outstanding year led by Colin Kerr, Zach Kriftcher, Jordan Epstein. The Yanks then faced the second seeded Marlins in the championship game.

The Marlins reached the finals by defeating the Mets. Bryan Miller, Rob Furino and Mike Burley had outstanding seasons, but it was not enough to stop the baserunning and pitching of the Marlins. The Mets had defeated the Reds in the first round. Chris Ryder, Brad Wisselman and Sam Herzig played valiantly in defeat.

The championship game was well played, by the Yankees jumped on top early on key hits by Imperatore, Kaufman and Bryan Kallenberg. A five run fourth inning proved to be decisive. James Garcia pitched the final two innings in impressive fashion. Matt Siegel, Michael Brown and Steve Geisenheimer made important contributions. James Lopalito, Jon Schneider and Joe Barrett played very well in defeat. The Marlins had an outstanding season and should be commended. The final score of 8-1 was not indicative of the quality of play by both teams.

The first full season of baseball at the newly renovated Lions Field was exciting for players and parents alike. The facility was able to handle four games simultaneously. All teams displayed great sportsmanship and the quality of play improved as the season progressed. Congratulations and thanks to all the participants.
