I share Mr. Rosen's concern about the safety of pedestrians at the crosswalk on Herbert Avenue and Main Street (Letters to the Editor, May 2, 2002). I have phoned the Port Washington Police Department, the Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County to register my concern.
We need the Port Washington police to provide a crossing guard and/or more enforcement at that location. The police department has recently increased the size of its force; certainly, an officer on duty at that spot would alert motorists to the necessity of compliance. We need the town or county to provide more visible signs at that location. Most of all, we need motorists to obey the law and be more considerate of the many train commuters, bus riders, shoppers, runners and walkers who use that crosswalk every day, all day, not just during rush hour.
I agree with Mr. Rosen that if the community expresses its concern, with calls and letters, we may be able to get a crossing guard, strict enforcement and bolder signs at this spot before there is a serious accident.
