Feb. 6 is proclaimed Girls and Women in Sports Day. Now in its 16th year, the event is celebrated nationally. The Port Washington School District Athletic Department and the Student Athletic Association club sponsored a morning filled with sports clinics, special guests and demonstrations on Saturday morning, Feb. 2 at Schreiber High School. All girls in grades 3 through 8 in the Port Washington School District were invited to attend.
Ms. Rose Bonanno, district athletic director, and Mrs. Evelyn Garofalo, advisor to the student athletic association, organized the day. The young students actively participated in: basketball, field hockey, soccer and badminton clinics. Coaches, physical education teachers and Schreiber students worked with the youths. It was a wonderful experience for the students and instructors. The girls were extremely enthusiastic. Many were being introduced to and trying an activity that was completely new to them. For the coaches and teachers it is always exciting to see youngsters having so much fun through sports.
A very special guest who worked with and spoke to the girls was Jennifer Lalor, a professional soccer player; she is midfielder on the NY Power team. Also on hand, not only to meet the girls up close but also to personally sign copies of her book was Jennifer DeSena. She is the author of Girl Power. Women On Winning. These special guests were inspirational to everyone. They once again showed us that in whatever capacity one is involved, whether it be playing, teaching or coaching, we can all enrich each others lives and that there are no boundary lines for girls and women in sports.
