The Port Washington Water District recommends that customers review the following precautions to prevent their water pipes from freezing and protect their properties from damaging water leaks. The time spent in prevention is well worth it, compared to dealing with costly repairs and broken pipes when it is cold outside.

Insulate the pipes in unheated areas like basements, attacks, garages, utility rooms, crawl spaces and pantries. Pay particular attention to piping along outer walls and the north side of the building since cold weather and prevailing winds make these areas more susceptible.

Garden hoses should be drained, disconnected and stored for the winter months and underground sprinkler systems should be drained and shut off. Remember, it is strictly prohibited to insert chemicals into underground sprinkler systems at any time.

Outdoor spigots must be turned off from inside the building to prevent freezing. If you have an underground water meter pit, ensure that it is clear of debris and securely bolted down. If there is a problem with the covering, contact the Roslyn Water District for assistance.
