Carreen Carol died on Oct. 4, 2001 after a long illness. Carreen was a Port Washington resident for 42 years and can be fondly remembered for her beautiful singing voice - she sang at Virgils then at the Club House - for many years. Until 15 years ago she was the vice president of the Manhattan Savings Bank in NYC. Carreen was a dedicated animal lover. She is missed greatly by her many friends. Lucille Wells, a Port Washington resident since 1989, passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2001, just three months short of her 102nd birthday. Until entering the Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation , Mrs. Wells resided with her daughter and son-in-law Penny and George Knight at their home in the Mitchell Farms section of Port and actively participated in the affairs of the community.
Born in Dows, IA, in 1900, Lucille spent her childhood at a time when the frontier environment was still a very real presence. Following her graduation from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN, she taught high school prior to her marriage to Harry Wells, a department store executive. They made their home in Akron, OH, and then in Cleveland Heights, OH. Subsequently she was the executive director of the Akron, OH, Area Girl Scouts and then moved on to teach at a Lutheran school in St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. She traveled widely in the US and Europe in her later years.
She is survived by her daughters, Penny of Port Washington and MaryBeth of Mt. Shasta, CA, as well as seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by three generations of the immediate family and by numerous others who have been touched by her long and active life.
Scott Randall Burwell, 25, of Port Washington, died on Dec. 3, 2001. Scott is survived by his parents Christine and John Randall Burwell; his stepmother Lois; his sisters Casey, Hannah and Olivia; and grandfather Gus. He is also survived by his Aunt Doreen, Uncle Paul and cousin Nicholas. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Religious service at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
