Opinion

I am writing as a longtime resident of the Port Washington community, as a parent whose two children have benefited immeasurably from the excellent education this community's schools afford, and as a lifelong educator.

I am concerned that it is now the end of July and the teachers of Port Washington are still without a contract. Port Washington has had a long-standing tradition of supporting quality education. For over 25 years, we have been able to work out issues collaboratively and respectfully, without the embarrassment of beginning a school year without a contract in place. It is my sincere hope that our community will demonstrate its interest in and support of quality education by urging the Board of Education to negotiate in good faith with the teachers who serve Port Washington and its children so well.
