U.S. Congressman Gary Ackerman, and members of his staff, paid a special visit to Port Washington to dine at Ayhan's Shish Kebab. The congressman wanted to show his support for and faith in Ayhan. The State Department of Environmental Conservation and the State Department of Health sponsored a special informational meeting in Port Washington recently to discuss the opening of a Sbarro restaurant at the site of the former Munsey Cleaners. The site, at the southeast corner of Port Blvd. and Main Street, is an inactive hazardous waste site. An initial remedial investigation indicated that PERC contamination exists in the groundwater and the soil. However, after significant and successful remediation efforts, officials report that the site is safe for a restaurant. FULL STORY
