The spring soccer season has come to its inevitable conclusion. Intramurals taught skills and teamwork to hundreds of boys and girls. Travel teams improved on those abilities and expanded on the roles of sportsmanship and competition.
This author would like to take a moment to thank the (literally) hundreds of parents who gave their time to coach, run lines, acted as administrators, cheerleaders, contributors to this column, and supporters of soccer players all over Port Washington.
The following teams finished 3rd or higher in their respective divisions: Lightning (Boys U10, Division 3), Vipers (Boys U11, Division 6) Shock Wave (Boys U12, Division 5), Blue Storm (Boys U13, Division 2), Wildcats (Boys U13, Division 6), Stingrays (Girls U13, Division 5).
Two final team notes:
The Port Lightning (Boys U10) finished out the spring session undefeated in league play and the Waldbaums Tournament and will move up to Division 2 in the fall. Unfortunately, the Waldbaums final was cancelled due to bad weather and as such the Lightning were crowned "Co-Champions," with another team from West Babylon. It was an exciting year for the U10 boys who look forward to new challenges in the fall.
On June 23 and 24, the Port Washington Xtreme (new U10 boys) had their first travel soccer experience. They played two talented teams from Manhasset. The boys won one game and lost one game. A game against New Hyde Park was canceled because of the weather. Most importantly, the team played together for the first time, had fun and gained valuable experience.
Again, thank you to everyone involved in Port soccer - see you in the fall!
