Helen J. Bachko died on April 12, 2001. A native of New York, she was the wife of the late Nicholas Bachko, a Merchant Marine veteran and senior vice president of United States Lines, supervisor of construction on the SS United States.

Mrs. Bachko was employed by Rockefeller University as medical records librarian and attended NYU. She was president of the Sands Point Garden Club for five years, during which time she conceived of, raised the funding for, built and tended the Fragrance Garden for the blind deaf at the Helen Keller Center in Sands Point. Mrs. Bachko also chaired the Channel 13 PBS TV Benefit on LI and was active in the Girl Scouts. She was a member of the Ladies Propeller Club and was a major donor and volunteer for the Maritime Museum at Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Jadwin Bachko of NY, owner and CEO of Nicholas Company, an American Flag Ship Management ; and two sisters, Stella Martin and Eleanore Jadwin of Rancho Bernardo, CA.

A graveside service was conducted on April 26 in Warwick River Menonite Church with the Rev. M. Lloyd Weaver officiating. Arrangements were made by the W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

Alfonso Candela, 66, of Port Washington, died on June 1, 2001. He worked in construction and was a member of International Union Local #1298. Son of Alfred Candela and Filomena (Meo). Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery. Frances Arresta (nee Trapani), of Port Washington, died on June 4, 2001. Wife of the late Louis "Doc" Arresta. Mother of Kathleen (Michael) Renga, the late Cynthia Agate and Louis C. (Gina) Arresta. Grandmother of six. Aunt of Charles Giardina and the late Vincent Trapani. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemtery. Marion Lehman, of Ft. Meyers, FL, formerly of Port Washington, died on June 6, 2001. Mother of Debbie, George, Gia and the late Kim. Grandmother of Robert, Eddie, Anthony, Katie, Erin and Gaby. A memorial service was held at Hope Hospice, Ft. Meyers. Contributions can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
