Wake up and smell the coffee. Every parent in this district owes it to themselves and their children to attend at least one board of education meeting. You should be informed first hand about the decision-making process that affects our children's day to day lives. Since when do directors make decisions in a vacuum? We have principals, teachers, staff members, and concerned involved parents at every one of these meetings but somehow many board members presume to know more than all of us put together.
We have board members who repeatedly ignore the advice of their own administrators. What gives them the power to dictate to us what our children should have? Last I looked these elected officials were supposed to represent us which means that they need to listen and learn about what the needs of the students are according to the people who are most directly involved. What good is it to have our principals make recommendations if these are to be ignored? Why do we have task forces if their advice remains unheeded? Why do we hire outside professional consultants if their suggestions will be tossed aside? Come to the board of education meetings, it is cheaper than a movie and often just as entertaining. See and hear for yourself how these decisions are made.
Parents, each of you needs to support this budget in its entirety. Do not shortchange our children and our schools. Show the board of education that we believe in our community even if they don't. As it is this budget will not provide for all the items that our school system needs. To remove anything would be criminal. Remember Support Port and vote yes for the budget. Become involved in all aspects of your child's education by attending board meetings and expressing your opinion. Do not let a collective few speak for all of us.
