I was appalled at the inaction of Dr. Barish, and even more disappointed with the parents of the students engaged in underage drinking on the day before sports night. Where is the outrage at this type of behavior pre-sports night or any other time, Dr. Barish, in not canceling sports night, which softened the lesson to all students that this type of behavior is unacceptable?
If Dr. Barish did not bar these students from sports night, the parents should have exercised their own discipline by not permitting them to participate. Too many parents, by neglecting their roll, are setting a dangerous precedent.
Judging from the shootings and erratic behavior of some students across the country, we, as parents, share the responsibility of educating our children about the rights and wrongs in our society. Children must be held accountable for their actions.
Our children attended Port Washington Schools at a dangerous time, the '70s and '80s, but we made sure we knew where they were, whom they were with, and what they were doing at all times.
