The Port Washington Lightning (Boys, U10) have started the season with two impressive victories. In State Cup actions, they defeated Commack in a tight 1-0 game. They then opened their league play with a 4-0 defeat of Rockville Centre. Backfielders Josh Greenberg and Johnny Marks led the Lightning defense.
The Hurricanes (Boys, U11) lost a nail-biter 1-0 to Massapequa. Although the Hurricanes were able to develop several good scoring opportunities, they were unable to convert. In other U11 boys' action, the Vipers fell 3-1 in a fierce wind to the Farmingdale Apollos. Two first half, wind-assisted goals put the Vipers behind early. However, Spencer Irving at middle and Harry Roberts at center led a furious second-half surge. Nick Balterman scored one goal and Brent Gillespie apparently scored another but the goal was nullified by a penalty. The Apollos scored an open-net goal with 5 seconds left to close the game.
Port's U12 Boys Team, the Storm, fell in a close game, to Rockville Centre, 2-0. Starting the game a man down, the Storm defense, consisting of John Dumas, Will Frappaola, Daniel Reese and Davis Aguilar, played the game even, allowing only a single goal in the first half. The second half saw the Storm's best offensive efforts, led by forwards Evan Street, Kyle Shenfield and Wilson Sarmiento, come up short of the net against an excellent Rockville Centre defense.
