The Rein Lumi Scholarship is being established by friends and family, classmates and business associates to honor the memory of Rein Lumi, a student/athlete graduate of Schreiber High School, Class of 1958. The scholarship will recognize the best all-around athlete across multiple sports. The award recipient must have participated in at least two varsity sports during his/her senior year, with a preference for three. Each year, the Rein Lumi Athletic Award will go to the best all-around athlete based on the teaching staff's suggestion.

Once initial donations are collected, the fund will be established, and starting in 2001 each year at graduation this award will be presented to a student deserving this honor. Beginning in 2001, the high school will administer the fund, and future gifts can be made to The Rein Lumi Scholarship Fund through Schreiber High School. Donations can be made out to The Rein Lumi Scholarship Fund, and sent to Schreiber High School, Port Washington, NY 11050, c/o the Rein Lumi Scholarship Fund.

Rein Lumi and his family came to the United States from Estonia via Sweden in 1948. The departure from Estonia in 1944 was a heroic one as that country had come under Russian domination prior to the end of WW II, and intense wartime conditions persisted.

The Lumi family moved to Port Washington in 1950 and Remi entered the 5th grade. Always a good student and fine athlete, Rein excelled at baseball, basketball and football throughout junior and senior high school. He received varsity letters in all three sports his sophomore and junior years, as well as All-Conference and All-County recognition.

He received a scholarship to Clarkson College, where he studied engineering and business and played basketball and lacrosse.

Rein Lumi was renowned for his dedication, sportsmanship and team spirit. He went on to become a very successful business executive at Chemical Bank, Bankers Trust and Merrill Lynch.

The scholarship in his name, will be awarded to the graduating student/athlete who excels at multiple sports, displays outstanding sportsmanship and maintains a high academic standing. Logo
