  • NEWS: Update on Funds Set Up for Justin Bakst and Patrick McCloskey

    Family and friends of Justin Bakst have established an account with the school district. A request has been made to the board of education to establish a scholarship in Justin's memory. It is hoped that the scholarship fund will attract enough contributions so that an annual award can be made to a Schrieber graduate. A committee will be established to determine the criteria for awarding the scholarship. Currently, the account has $1,495. Donations to the scholarship fund can be sent to: FULL STORY

  • NEWS: An Innovative Middle School Design Is Unveiled

    Board members, educators, and community members alike seemed generally pleased with the new plan for a 1200-student middle school, which was presented at the board of education's meeting on Tuesday, Dec, 12. "The impact of this design," said Weber Middle School principal Matthew Sanzone, "is small schools within a school ... the design really makes it happen." The plan, created by the Spector Group, sought to foster the more personal atmosphere of the house structure (of which there are four in Weber) while unifying the building into one school at the same time. Core services or programs, shared by students regardless of their specific house assignment, are centrally located. Great effort was evidently made to identify and incorporate underutilized space in the design. It also offered components to resolve both short- and long-term space problems. FULL STORY

  • SPORTS: Elks Annual 'Hoop Shoot'

    The Great Neck/Port Washington Elks Lodge's competition for the 29th annual "Hoop Shoot," the national free throw shooting contest for youngsters ages 8 through 13, will be held at Weber Middle School on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 11 a.m., lasting to about 1 p.m. Contestants must register at 11 a.m. to qualify for the event.   • SPORTS: On The Bay: Discovering Sands Point

    Two very interesting publications came across your reporter's desk in the past week. The entire issue of the Coastal Cruising Guide, published six times a year by Metro Publishing Ltd., was devoted to Manhasset Bay. Werner Pleus, from Plandome, wrote the text for the entire issue, with aerial photos by professional sailing photographer Dan Nerney. Additional photos by Julie Pleus and Sue Geist add a visual story to the well-written text in this issue. FULL STORY
