I would like to commend the Port Washington News, Anton Community Newspapers, Jackie Pierangelo and Emily Berkowitz for their reporting of the sad state of affairs at the Port Washington Board of Education. If anything, their coverage understates the chaos and dysfunction of this important body.
The behavior of Mr. Sussman and Mr. Zimmerman is not only an embarrassment to our community, it is an affront to the high quality professionals who work for our school district. We, and they, should not be represented by people whose tactics of bullying and intimidation make it impossible to get the public's work done.
When is the Port Washington community going to wake up to the harm that is being done in their name? To quote Edmund Burke, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." What the good people of Port Washington need to do now is to attend board of education meetings whenever possible. The presence of a large crowd at meetings encourages decorum among the board members. Keep yourselves informed of school district issues and how they are being handled by this board. If you cannot attend BOE meetings, please go to the administration building on Campus Drive and borrow a free copy of the videotapes made of BOE meetings for home viewing. Please ask for the tape of the Oct. 17 meeting and see for yourselves. Most of all, remember that in one and a half years, in May of 2002, you will have the opportunity to restore some dignity to our board of education by replacing Mr. Sussman and Mr. Zimmerman.
