The 22nd Annual Manhasset Bay YC Fall Series, held over two consecutive weekends, Oct. 14-15 and 21-22, concluded on Sunday, Oct. 22, after four days of glorious sun and variable wind conditions. One hundred four boats, mostly from the metropolitan area, but a few from as far away as Chicago, competed in 11 divisions on Long Island Sound east of Execution Rock. The first weekend the wind was light, forcing the Race Committee to postpone the start of the race on Sunday, Oct. 15, but by the end of the first weekend, three races were completed. Sailing conditions improved on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22, as a cool front brought more wind to Long Island Sound. A total of six races were completed, and according to Sue Miller, event chairperson, "This is the first time in several years we've had racing all four days." Because of the large number of boats in the regatta, there were essentially two race committees, both on Long Island Sound within sight of each other. Sue Miller was PRO (Principal Race Officer) for the Red Circle on Resolute, the first weekend and The Dottie J on the second weekend. Gene Bowler was the PRO for the White Circle on Growler. The Dottie J and Growler were lent to MBYC for the Fall Series by the USMMA. Bill Foster, the present owner of Resolute, bought her from Jean Shope, after Roger's death. It was a treat for all those who knew Roger Shope to see Resolute back in our bay as a RC Committee Boat. And with Jean on board, it brought back many happy memories of days past. The inspiration for the Fall Series came from John B. Thompson Jr., who described its purpose as two-fold: to develop in our own area high level big boat competition and to enjoy Long Island Sound racing under the best weather conditions possible. Many readers are familiar with John Thomson's successful sailing record on Solution and Infinity.
