School District's Architect Resigns
For the second time within the last five years, the school district's architect has resigned. The most recent one, Ralph Ottaiano, tendered his resignation on Oct. 13, after working on the facilities plan for the past three and a half years. He informed the board that he will finish the capital projects that he's currently working on. The architect who preceded Mr. Ottaiano, John Grillo, resigned in November of 1996.

On the Bay
The Port Washington YC hosted the 4th Annual Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 7, a competition that is both a sailing regatta and charity fundraising event. Prior to the regatta, crews of registered yachts raise money for leukemia research, a disease that is the number one killer of children. The crew that raises the most donations wins the Leukemia Cup itself. This year, Jay Campbell, owner/skipper of Matriarch, won the Cup. Campbell and crew raised approximately $6,500 for the society, which represents a substantial portion of the $14,000 total donated.

Big Babe Golf Champions
Long Island winners of the Big Babe Golf Championships will be packing their bags and getting ready to swing for a cure at the American Cancer Society's National Golf event, the largest amateur golf championship of its kind. Heading to the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami on Oct. 27 and 28 will be three women's and three men's teams from Long Island, including: Engineers Country Club, Long Island National Golf Club and Lido Golf Club.
