Welcome Back! Kindergarteners (a.k.a. the class of 2013) from the Sousa School board their bus to go home.

With a 2000-2001 enrollment of 4,424 students, the Port Washington School District is slightly above its enrollment projections of 4,397. (Last year the projection of 4,252 was 69 students lower than the enrollment of 4,321) This year, the middle school and high school projections were almost on the button. The elementary schools registered 26 more students than projected.

When asked to comment on these figures, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Inserra said, "With the projections still holding, and exceeding them, the facilities problem has really reached critical proportions at the middle school. One of the 7th grade science classes is meeting in a non-science school with no laboratory facilities available. We're petitioning a principal's office to give a corner to a guidance counselor. We're also petitioning rooms for confidential conversations with psychologists. The infrastructure, such as the cafeteria, gymnasium and hallways, are extremely crowded.

"At the elementary level," the superintendent continued, "all schools have exceeded capacities. Additional accommodations, especially at Guggenheim, had to be made, particularly in the area of special education.

"Next year we cannot function in the present structure," noted Dr. Inserra.

The enrollment figures for this year and the past two years, and the 2000 projected enrollment for the schools and individual grade levels breakout as follows:
