Eugene V. Leonard, 78, died on Aug. 10, 2000. He had lived in Port Washington for 40 years until he retired with his wife to Amherst, MA, four years ago.
He was educated at Stuyvesant High School, NYC, and received an engineering degree from Cooper Union in 1942. After working on radar for Philco Corp. He designed early computers, he was a pioneer in electronic data transmission and later developed the Chyron digital character generator for TV graphics. He was both president and chief engineer of Chyron Corp. of Plainview and of Digitronics Corp. of Albertson.
He had a long time interest in using media interactively to promote democracy in the community. His latest project was for the National Science Foundation and Kentucky Educational TV to explore improvements in distant learning.
He leaves his wife Doris Leonard of Amherst, MA; his son Seth Leonard of Garden City; his daughter Julie Ruger of Houston, TX; and granddaughters Krysten and Lauree Raymond of Pittsburgh, PA.
Final farewells will be said by the family in Massachusetts at at later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Mary McLoughlin, 81, died on Aug. 11, 2000. Mary was a lifelong resident of Port Washington. Daughter of the late Michael and Margaret McLouglin. Sister of Thomas, John and Catherine. She was predeceased by her brother James and sister Margaret. Mary is also survived by eight nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Mass celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara Church. Interment Mount St. Mary's Cemetery.
