Call for Neighborhood Watch
A caller from the Port Washington Estates section reports that on Aug. 10 at 9:15 p.m., as he was coming downstairs after saying goodnight to his son, someone fired a pellet gun at his front door. He believes that this act of criminal mischief is an escalation of previous harassments stemming from an incident that took place in front of his home a few weeks ago.
School Board Looks to the Fall
It may have been summer outside, but inside the Schreiber auditorium on August 8th, fall was definitely in the air. Gearing up for the start of a new school year just a few weeks away, the BOE's August 8th agenda focused on converting Weber classrooms, monitoring kindergarten enrollment, and approving an agreement with New York University for continuation of mental health services for the Alternative H.S. students and families. The hiring of teachers and administrators to fill vacancies is progressing, though the competition is fierce for qualified candidates, it was reported.
On The Bay
Port Washington YC hosted the JSA of LIS (Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound) Blue Jay Race Week on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 7-8. A total of 96 boats with over 230 sailors, plus 33 instructors participated in this annual event. Sailing conditions were excellent on Monday with four races completed in a steady 15 knot wind with gusts to 20 knots.
Manhasset Bay Gold Cup Poker Run, Sat., Aug. 19, Long Island Sound
A boating extravaganza for the young at heart will take place on Saturday, noon, Aug. 19, on Long Island Sound, the sixth annual running of the Manhasset Bay Gold Cup Poker Run '00. Headquartered at LaMotta's Manhasset Bay Marina, in Port Washington, the event will have 100 plus powerboaters transiting Long Island Sound, between Bridgeport, CT, and Port Chester, NY, then back to Port Washington.
