Jewell C. Roberts (nee O'Brien), 76, of Port Washington, died on June 14, 2000. Wife of the late John. Mother of John Roberts, Catherine Orr (John) and Florence Basss (Barry). Grandmother of John, James, Laurie Ann, Robert, Jimmy, Julie, Danny and Kaitlyn. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home, Port Washington. Former Port resident Robert P. Knapp Jr. died June 14, 2000 in West Redding, CT. He was 82. With his wife Eliso and growing family, Mr. Knapp lived in Port Washington from 1949 to 1964, first on Fairview Ave. and then on N. Washington St. He served as Baxter Estates Village Attorney and was also a member of St. Stephen's Church. He and his wife were co-presidents of the Port Washington PTA.
A 1940 graduate of West Point and a 1949 graduate of Columbia Law School, Mr. Knapp was an attorney for over 50 years, working at Breed, Abbot & Morgan; Corn Products Company (now Bestfoods); Windels & Marx; and Lowe & Knapp, all in NYC. He specialized in antitrust litigation and successfully defended Michelin Tire, among other corporate clients, in two major antitrust cases. In 1944-46, as a lieutenant colonel in the US Army, Mr. Knapp served on General George C. Marshall's truce team to China, monitoring an armistice between Nationalist and Communist armies.
Mr. Knapp is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elise Ford Knapp of West Redding; four children, David M. Knapp of Bangkok, Thailand, Michal K. Brownell of Cambridge, MA, Robert P. Knapp III of Port Washington and Frederic H. Knapp of San Francisco; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on June 25 at Christ Church, Route 58, Ridge, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Redding Land Trust, Box 76, Redding Center, CT 06875.
John J. Kelly, long time resident of Port Washington, died on June 16, 2000 at the age of 93 in Michigan. Mr. Kelly worked for Western Electric - ATT as its senior auditor until he retired in 1973. He was a charter member of the Telephone Co. Pioneers. Mr. Kelly was the husband of the late Marie O'Neil Kelly. He is survived by three children Ann Kelly, John P. Kelly and Frank Kelly. He has three grandchildren, Daniel, Kathleen and Jennifer. Viewing will be at Knowles Funeral Home on June 23. A Mass will be held at St. Peter of Alcantara Church on June 24 at 9 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery.
