In what will be remembered as a Cinderella season, the St. Peter's 7th Grade Girls Basketball team won the LI Championship with an overall record of 16 wins and only 2 losses. After finishing the regular season at 10-2 the team won 2 games at an invitational tournament prior to achieving a 4-0 record in the playoffs to "win the whole thing". This years team members were Nicole Cavallaro, Halsey Diakow, Lean Duranti, Alycen English, Debra Harris, Farrin Jay, Kathleen Madigan, Erica Moore, Laura Plominski, Robyn Schechter and Jackie Striker. These eleven girls played together as a team the entire season and steadily improved their skills. By the start of the single elimination playoffs the girls were ready in every aspect of the game. Whether it was executing a half court offense, breaking a full court press or running a very effective full court press, boxing out, girl to girl defense or a zone defense these young ladies had become quite a talented basketball team. Each player on the team not only developed her own skills but experienced through dedication, unselfishness and hard work that teamwork is the key to success. There were many personal highlights and some absolutely unbelievable achievements that will be etched in the memories of each team member for a time; if not forever. In the Championship game St. Peter's went ahead 14-2 lead to start the game. In the 4th quarter St. Vincent's of Elmont tied the score in the final seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. Once again as this St. Peter's team did all season, they rose to the occasion and ended up winning the game by making key fouls shots and controlling the ball when it counted. The excitement of winning was a wonderful experience for the girls, parents and spectators that supported the team. Stan Plominski and Al Duranti coached this year's team. They both feel fortunate to have coached this special group of young ladies. Congratulations to the team for representing both St. Peter's and Port Washington in such an outstanding manner!
