This past weekend, more than 20 Port Washington children participated in the Hoops for Lymphoma 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Nassau Coliseum. This event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars toward finding a cure. The kids are grouped according to age and play a round robin competition. Three of the Port teens advanced to the semifinals and one team went on to win their division.
A team made up of third-graders Connor English, Joe Gil, Timmy Pond and Ben Greene were 3-1 in the regular competition, and lost in overtime in the semifinals of the playoffs. In the fifth-grade division, two Port teams advanced to the playoffs. They ended up matched against each other in the semifinals and fought a hard-contested game. The team of Jeremy Goldman, Michael Duranti, Kevin Alas and Matt Plominski defeated a team of Patrick English, Tommy Mansfield, Josh Marten and Sean Balaban and then went on to win their division by defeating a very good St. Paul's team behind the clutch shooting of Mike Duranti and Jeremy Goldman.
In the seventh-eighth-grade girls division, a team comprised of Alycen English, Jackie Stricker, Jill Byers and Brooke Schneider stormed into the playoffs and lost a heartbreaker in overtime of the semifinals. Alycen scored 10 of her team's 15 points and Jackie contributed clutch offensive rebounding and second chance points. All of the Port kids seemed to have a great time and truly helped a terrific cause. Our hats are off to them!
