After last night's Board of Education meeting at Schreiber I am confused. I am not confused over the central issue, that is, the essential need for additional space and the upgrading of all of the educational facilities. My confusion is over the presentations made. Dr. Inserra's presentation of the specific areas of need and the majority (of the BOE) plan for meeting those needs was clear. While I am not unconcerned over the proposed cost (an estimated $87 million) and would be pleased if they were lower, I did appreciate the educational soundness of the plan. My confusion comes with the presentation made by Mr. Zimmerman and Mr. Sussman. I'm not sure whether to be extremely angry or scared. It appears that the incredibly ridiculous plan they presented was to serve no other purpose than to be divisive. There were so many obvious glaring flaws and inconsistencies (which were raised by members of the public following the presentation) as for the plan to have any real utility. Mr. Zimmerman's arrogant tone and demeanor and Mr. Sussman's lack of ability to support any of his ideas when questioned certainly added nothing to their stance. From this point of view I'm angry. On the other hand if either of these gentlemen believe, or think anyone else believes, that there is any real merit in the plan they presented, I am scared. Scared over the caliber of individuals we have elected to our Board of Education.
Whichever the case may be, the school board members are elected by this community to represent the educational interests (and ultimately the futures) of our children. Mr. Zimmerman and Mr. Sussman have clearly demonstrated over and over again that they lack the ability, emotionally and/or intellectually, to maturely work with other board members to meet this challenge. Any competent adult should be able to admit their mistakes and know their limits. I believe that the Port Washington community should admit their mistake as we have surely had more than our limit of Mr. Zimmerman and Mr. Sussman.
