Who says public officials are never responsive to their constituents? We know at least one who does, John M. Waltz, Commissioner of the Nassau County Department of Public Works.

After the article "Potholes in a Road Repair Project" by Collin Nash appeared in Newsday recently, Mr. Waltz met with neighbors surrounding a construction site on Harbor Road in Port Washington and with representatives of Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington, and heard our objections to potentially hazardous and unsightly conditions in the area during a road improvement project.

Mr. Waltz promptly made sure the problems were remediated. A safe pathway for pedestrians who use the street to get to and from buses was created; unsightly materials were collected and stored in a safe manner; and barriers were installed to cover large construction items that children might use as toys.

The community is safer and prettier. We wish to publicly say thank you, Mr. Waltz.
