(Editors Note: The following letter was sent to Dr. Roy Nelson, President of the Board of Education and reprinted here at the writer's request and "Residents to Save the Guggenheim Nature Trails.") I represent the "Residents to Save the Guggenheim Nature Trails." It has come to my client's attention that the School District's board is considering a partial development of the Guggenheim Nature Trails, the seventeen (17) acres adjoining the elementary school, for use as athletic fields. Any type of development of this parcel would be severely detrimental to the site and quality of life of the adjoining area's residents of the "Terrace" and the Village of Sands Point. My client and many residents of the surrounding neighborhoods are adamantly opposed to any intrusion into this nature preserve. Please make certain that this purported project is properly discussed in open public hearings so that all interested parties are informed and can offer their comments concerning same. The board should be aware that if it proceeds with the development of any portion of the Guggenheim Nature Trails, it is required to strictly comply with the State Environmental Quality Review Act and the Sands Point Village Zoning Code. Such compliance will require an Environmental Impact Statement. In the statement, the board will be obligated to recite the effect on the environment and traffic and provide alternatives to the proposal. My responsibility is to ensure the board complies with the law. Thank you for your cooperation. Darrell J. Conway
