It is not surprising to us that only Ellen Markowski has spoken about the issues in her candidacy for water commissioner - why she is running and what she seeks to accomplish in that role. Only Ellen has had experience as an administrator. Only Ellen has worked most effectively as a government official. Only Ellen has a long track record as an environmentalist, as the executive director of Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and in her involvement with other environmental organizations. Only Ellen has served in a leadership capacity before - with her local civic organization, for Residents, for Citizens Concerned About the Landfill and with other such organizations.
We have known Ellen for nearly 18 years, throughout her tenure in all of these roles, and we say with conviction that Ellen has always worked tirelessly in every capacity. She has never stayed on the sidelines during Port's environmental battle over the years - the closing and cleanup of the landfill, the defeat of a plan to build a massive garbage incinerator, the cleanup of Hempstead Harbor, the reclamation and rejuvenation of the sandpits. Ellen always takes a proactive role, working for the betterment of the community. We are confident that in the capacity of water commissioner Ellen would remain as effective and hardworking as before. She is clearly the candidate best qualified for the job.
