Jane Marion Simpson, 79, of Bear River, Nova Scotia, Canada, passed away on Nov. 3, 1999, of a stroke. She was the beloved wife of Larry and devoted mother of Diane Fuehrer of Ft. Salonga, Debra Hutchins of Digby, NS and Dale Rafuse of Granville Ferry, NS. She was also the cherished grandmother of Kristin and Michael Fuehrer, Scott and Cody Hutchins and Kerry and Amy Rafuse.
Jane was born in Brooklyn and raised in Locust Valley. She was a resident of Port Washington for many years. Jane, her husband and two youngest daughters moved to Nova Scotia over 33 years ago. She awas a beautiful hostess to her many friends and noted for her delicious baking! She so enjoyed indoor plants and gardening. Jane was also a beautiful tole painter. For the last three years she had been a wonderful caregiver to her ailing husband.
William S. Hults, 93, of West Palm Beach, FL, passed away on Nov. 13, 1999. He was born in Detroit, MI and moved to this area in 1966 coming here from Port Washington. Mr. Hults served as a NYS senator for 22 years and was a commissioner for the Motor Vehicle Division for the State of NY for seven years. He was a graduate of Columbia University, a volunteer fireman for the Atlantic Hook & Ladder Co. in Port Washington, a member of the Lions Club of PW and a member and past president of the North Hempstead Country Club of NY.
Mr. Hults was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ann E. Hults and a son, William S. Hults III. Survivors include a daughter, Jane A. Symanski of W. Palm Beach, Fl; three grandchildren, Gail Seldomridge of WPB, Walter Symanski (Cynthia) of Huntington, William Symanski (Darlene) of Charlotte, NC; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Hults of E. Hampton. Funeral services were held at the E. Earl Smith & Son Memory Gardens Chapel, Lake Worth, FL, with Rev. Robert Collins officiating, followed by interment at Lake Worth Memory Gardens.
Phyllis Barnard Brown, 89, died on Nov. 17, 1999 at St. Francis Hospital. Born in London, England in 1910, she came to the US in 1931, attended Centenary College in NJ for two years, majoring in philosophy, graduating valedictorian of her class. She completed her bachelor's degree at Barnard College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1935. Phyllis and her husband, Walter H. Brown Jr., came to Port Washington in 1937. He was a retired sneior partner in the law firm of Wilkie, Farr and Gallagher in NYC when he died on 1986.
Phyllis was especially active in her church, St. Peter of Alcantara, volunteer teaching elementary grades as well as contributing and publishing some of her many religious writings and poems. She also participated in numerous religious study groups over the years. At home, her own carefully tended English garden was her favorite activity and her knowledge of plants was extensive. She is survived by her son, Walter B. Brown of Port Washington; her daughter, Deborah Pillorge of Royal Oak, MD; and by her four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Peter of Alcantara on Nov. 19. Interment Nassau Knolls Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Austin F. Knowles Funeral Home.
Dorothy Eastman (Madden), 86, of Heritage Village, Southbury, CT, died on Nov. 25 at Mediplex of Southbury. She was the widow of Harold Eastman. Mrs. Eastman was born Jan. 13, 1913 in College Point, daughter of the late Lucas and Bertha (Lutters) Madden. Formerly of Port Washington, Port Jefferson and Rye, she moved to Southbury in 1991.
She leaves two sons, Harold Eastman of Yarmouth, MA and William Eastman of Rye; one daughter, Dorothy Miller of Southbury; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury. Funeral service at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Burial Nassau Knolls Cemetery.
