Last week on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a mishap at a street excavation caused a four inch gas main to be torn off at the corner of Bernard Street and South Maryland Avenue. This resulted in the closing off of all the roads that lead into the area. The surrounding houses and businesses on South Maryland up to Maple Street were evacuated, as were the banks on Port Blvd. between those blocks, according to Sergeant Morris of the Port Washington Police Department. He added that the homes and businesses on the north side of Vanderventer and the east side of South Bayles were also evacuated,.

A gas leak, which appears as a blur in front of the large scooper on the machine, caused the surrounding area to be evacuated.

"After about 40 minutes, Keyspan Energy was able to locate the valves and shut down the leak," said the sergeant.

Finally, the area was declared safe and everyone continued on with their Thanksgiving preparations.
