Ellen Markowski has firmly established herself as a competent public servant and a fighter for our environment. In the mid to late 80s as a civic activist she worked tirelessly to protect the residents of Port Washington and neighboring areas from the construction of a 990 ton per day incinerator, she worked to protect the residents from continued dumping at the Port Washington Landfill, so our drinking water would not be contaminated, and she worked to make sure that the landfill received superfund designation so that the massive remediation effort would be partially funded by the federal government, protecting our residents from having to fully fund the cleanup.
I have had the opportunity to observe Ellen working in many different capacities at Town Hall, and I have been very impressed by what I have seen. Helping to oversee the closing of the landfill and the completion of the remediation efforts at the superfund sight.
Working to make possible the Harbor Links Golf Course would be irrigated solely by rainwater collected on site was of paramount importance to her again demonstrating her efforts to protect our drinking water supply.
While I have been at odds with her former boss on many occasions in the past, I believe that the need for clean and safe drinking water transcends party labels and any dispute I had with the town supervisor. Ellen has worked hard for the residents of this town for over 15 years and has clearly demonstrated she can solve problems of monumental proportions and in my view earned the privilege to serve as our next Port Washington Water Commissioner.
